Fiat 500

The Fiat 500  is a car produced by the Fiat company of Italy between 1957 and 1975, with limited production of the Fiat 500 K estate continuing until 1977. The car was designed by Dante Giacosa.
Launched as NEW 500 in July 1957, it was a cheap and practical town car. Measuring only 3 meters (~10 feet) long, and originally powered by an appropriately sized 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term "small car" and is considered one of the first city cars.
In 2007, the 50th anniversary of the 500's launch, Fiat launched the new Fiat 500, stylistically inspired by the 500 but considerably heavier and larger, featuring a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive.
To meet the demands of the post-war market which called for economy cars, the Fiat 500 was rear-engine on the pattern of the Volkswagen Beetle, just like its bigger brother, the 1955 Fiat 600. Several car makers followed the now uncommon rear engine configuration at the time and were quite successful. The Neckar version manufactured in Heilbronn under a complicated deal involving NSU, was introduced in October 1961. In Upper Austria the firm of Steyr-Puch also produced cars based, by agreement, on the Fiat 500.
Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular vehicle throughout Europe. Besides the two-door coupe, it was also available as the "Giardiniera" station wagon; this variant featured the standard engine laid on its side, the wheelbase lengthened by 10 cm (4 in) to provide a more convenient rear seat, a full-length sunroof, and larger brakes from the Fiat 600.
The Fiat 500 is the long-awaited and well-received revival of an Italian icon. What it lacks in terms of interior packaging it more than makes up with sheer style and driver involvement. What we’re all waiting for is the hot little Abarth version.
A nicely pliant ride actually makes the 500 surprisingly refined through the manholes and potholes of urban driving. The only drawback is an oddly high driving position that can make taller drivers feel precariously close to the roofline.
There's the two-pot TwinAir engine with a claimed 68.9 mpg - though thrash it for a day and you'll be doing late 40's - a 69 bhp 1.2-liter petrol that takes 12.9 seconds to hit 62 mph, and a 1.3-liter diesel returning 72.4 mpg. That packs 95 bhp and takes 10.7 seconds to go from 0-62 mph. Expect this to be the new, new Mini. Ubiquitous, and frequently driven by highly punchable estate agents and smug media types. The bespoke and impressively retro-looking cabin in the 500 not only looks great, but also feels fairly expensive. Cheaper Fiats don't have a great reputation for reliability, but the 500 has yet to prove itself either way.Tall, narrow cars like this are bound to suffer from a little bit of pitch and roll, but the 500 still feels sure-footed and, vitally, entertaining when you're slinging it around a bit.Improvement over the original 500 is not, 60 years on, anything to feel smug about. The 500 is still cramped in the back, a bit too lofty from the driver's seat and not blessed with the ease of access of its cheaper sister the Panda.
