Mahindra Thar

ABOUT:

The Mahindra Thar is a subcompact four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle (SUV) and an off-road vehicle manufactured by Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. The vehicle was launched in the Indian market on October 4, 2010 to fill the void left by its predecessor the Mahindra MM540. The Thar has been voted one of the top 10 SUVs available in the Indian market. Three variants-DI 2WD, DI 4WD and CRDe.
Meet the newest addition to our long-term fleet – the Mahindra Thar CRDe AC. Our Thar is the top-end version, so it costs Rs 8.20 lakh on-road, Mumbai (should that be on-dirt?) and comes fully equipped. That means it gets a factory-fitted air-conditioner, power steering, four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case and back-to-basics motoring as part of its ‘long’ standard equipment list. Expensive, isn’t it?
I’ve had it for two weeks now, and I’m really enjoying the experience. You see, Mumbai’s rush hour traffic is almost a contact sport and the Thar’s metal bumpers have doubled up as Mad Max-style armor protection. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve never used them to smash through traffic (though I’m sometimes tempted to). But when in a Thar, taxis and rickshaws never, ever try to cut you off. I now find driving to work strangely therapeutic.
As I write this, the first heavy monsoon showers have hit Mumbai, and I’m surprised by how effective the soft-top is at keeping the weather out. Sure, there are a few minor leaks – the zippers for the canopy let in a bit, the stitching on the roof allows in a few stray drops and there’s a tiny leak in the front passenger footwell, but that’s it. In comparison, driving my dad’s old MM540 in the monsoons was like sitting under a waterfall.
There are a few things I wish Mahindra had thought through. I find it irritating how the AC vents don’t have enough movement, so it’s impossible to direct air straight at you. I have no choice but to wait for the AC (which is pretty effective) to cool the whole cabin down. There’s no re-circulation mode either, so getting caught in traffic behind a garbage truck literally stinks. The other gripe is with the new rubber mats – they may be easier to wash down than the old carpets, but they also slide around on the metal floor and I keep having to straighten them out.

Aston Martin DB9

ABOUT:

The Aston Martin DB9 is a GT sports car launched by Aston Martin in 2004.
The DB9 is the first model to be built at Aston Martin's Gaydon facility in Warwickshire, England. The moniker "DB" stems from the initials of David Brown, the owner of Aston Martin for a significant part of its history. The DB9, which was designed by Ian Callum and finished by his successor, Henrik Fisker, superseded the now-discontinued Aston Martin DB7 (also by Callum) which started production in 1994.
The Aston Martin DB9 comes in two variants; the coupe and 'Volante' convertible, each producing 470 bhp (350 kW; 477 PS) from a 6.0L V12 engine, originally taken from its sister car the V12 Vanquish. In fact, this V12 engine is why Aston Martin did not call the car the DB8, which could suggest that it has only a V8 engine. One report states that Aston Martin believed that this car was such a huge leap from the Jaguar XJ-S based DB7 that it named it DB9 instead of DB8, which they thought would indicate a gradual evolution. The Gaydon facility's production capacity for the DB9 could allow for approximately five thousand units per year, which is roughly the same production volume as other esteemed sports cars, in particular the Ferrari F430 and Porsche 911 Turbo. The DB9, however, is more often compared against other competitors in its segment: the Ian Callum designed Jaguar XKR, the Volkswagen-produced Bentley Continental GT, the ten-cylinder powered BMW M6, and the AMG variants of the Mercedes-Benz SL. Traditionally being a maker of more exclusive automobiles, CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez has stated that production numbers of the DB9 will be slightly higher than previous models.
The DB9 is the first Aston Martin model to be designed and developed on Ford's aluminium VH (vertical/horizontal) platform which also underpins Aston Martin's flagship DBS. The body structure is composed of aluminium and composites melded together by mechanically fixed self-piercing rivets and robotic assisted adhesive bonding techniques. The innovative bonded aluminium structure possesses more than double the torsional rigidity of its predecessor's, despite being 25 percent lighter. Aston Martin's engineers designed the quad-cam, 48-valve engine for the V12 Vanquish in collaboration with Ford's Research and Vehicle Technology team (RVT) and were able to reduce its weight by 11.8 kg (26 lb) for use in the DB9.

Land Rover Discovery 4

ABOUT:

The Land Rover Discovery is an off road focused mid-size SUV, from the British car maker Land Rover. There have been four generations of the vehicle, which was first introduced in 1989. The current Discovery 4 is marketed in North America as the LR4.
The Discovery 4 (called the LR4 in North America) is an updated version of the Discovery 3. Using the same Integrated Body Frame structure, the new Discovery has altered front and rear light units and a restyled front grille and bumper to adopt the same smoother, rounder style as also adapted for the 2010 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Discovery 4 (on most models) also retains the body-coloured wheel arches and bumpers as the late D3s (early D3s had black plastic trim). Optional Daylight Running Lamps can be specified whilst LED lamps feature prominently in both front and rear lamp units.
The majority of the changes are mechanical. The D4 receives two engines from Jaguar Land Rover's 'Gen III' range. The TDV6 Gen III is a 3-litre development of the 2.7-litre engine used in the D3. The new version features advanced twin-sequential turbochargers where a Variable geometry turbocharger is used at low engine speeds, with a second standard turbo is brought online at higher engine speeds. This system provides greater output than the older engine now 241 bhp (180 kW) and 600 N·m (440 lb·ft) whilst reducing CO2 emissions by 10%. The Gen III version of the V8 petrol engine (available in markets outside the UK such as North America, Russia, Australia, and some EU countries) is now a 5-litre unit with Direct Petrol Injection developing 385 bhp (287 kW) and 520 N·m (380 lb·ft).
The D3s six-speed manual transmission is no longer available in the UK (except on the basic GS model, see below). An improved version of the ZF six-speed automatic/sequential gearbox is now fitted which includes taller gearing to take advantage of the new engines' greater torque output and an updated lock-up system to further reduce fuel consumption. Other technical changes include the fitting of the more powerful brakes from the Range Rover Sport and thicker anti-roll bars to improve on-road handling. The electronic handling system have been updated - the Stability Control System now includes a programme that detects the onset of understeer and applies the brakes. The D4 retains its predecessor's fully independent air suspension with cross-linking when off-road and the twin-range transfer gearbox with an electronic infinitely-variable locking centre differential. As before a similar locking rear differential is available. The Terrain Response system remains but with two new features- the 'Sand' mode incorporates a new traction control mode to prevent loss of traction when starting off and stopping in soft sand, and the 'Rock Crawl' mode gains a feature that applies gentle brake pressure at low (less than walking pace) speeds to improve grip and stability on slick rock. The system is also 'retuned' to account for the new engines and gearboxes with their different torque characteristics. Other new electronic systems include Trailer Stability Assist which can adjust the throttle and brakes to prevent a dangerously swaying trailer.
The 2.7-litre TDV6 engine was available in Europe on the basic 2.7 GS passenger and 2010 Commercial ranges. Unlike the D3 base model this is equipped with air suspension and the Terrain Response system. The automatic transmission is an option on this model. The 3.0-litre Gen III model (only with automatic transmission) is also available in the GS trim level.
The Discovery 4 also features a redesigned interior (again in keeping with the new styles introduced elsewhere in the LR range for 2010). The instrument cluster is updated with the speedometer and tachometer analogue gauges being redesigned to improve clarity. The analogue temperature and fuel gauges of the D3, and the electronic information display are replaced by a single TFT screen capable of displaying information in a variety of modes and formats. The D4's interior also has a new centre console, which includes redesigned and simplified switches and controls. The D4 also has a new seat design and a wider range of available interior materials-some (such as the highly polished 'Piano Black' and wood veneer) are materials previously only seen in Range Rover models. The stated aim of the interior redesign was to lift the vehicle upmarket, especially the higher-spec models which are now aimed at the luxury and executive markets.
The D4 gains some electronic systems from the Range Rover lineup such as the optional 'Surround Camera System'- a series of cameras located in the headlamps, wing mirrors and rear tailgate handle which can display their images on the centre console screen to improve visibility when off-road, when hitching up to a trailer or when parking. Other electronic systems are intended to improve efficiency- for example the engines feature a 'Smart' alternator that only charges the battery when engine load is low, thus helping to reduce fuel consumption when the engine is working harder.
The Discovery 4 was unveiled in the summer of 2009 and went on sale in the United Kingdom on 1 September that year. A Commercial van variant was released in the UK at the same time using the 2.7 engine and offered in GS and XS trim levels. In the Republic of Ireland a Commercial van was offered from 1 January 2010 based on the XE 2.7 manual and HSE 3.0 auto engines.
For the 2011 model year announced late 2010, the 2.7 engine was dropped and two versions of the 3.0 litre engine were made available - one called the TDV6 and one called the SDV6 (the latter offering 245 bhp).
For the 2012 model year, diesel models in Europe came with the new 8-speed auto gearbox with steering wheel paddle controls and a circular dial selector that raises upon startup. The SDV6 engine was uprated to 255 bhp whilst both diesel engines featured reduced emissions for European models. During 2012 the HSE Luxury special edition was announced, featuring enhanced trim levels, and available in Europe and North American markets.
In Ireland, 2012 saw the introduction of a new 5 seat version of the Discovery 4 classified as an N1 Commercial vehicle, therefore attracting lower VRT rates. There is also a new 2 seat Commercial on the same rules. All Irish models came with the lower emissions TDV6 engine.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible 2014

ABOUT:

The Range Rover Evoque is a Compact SUV from Land Rover, part of Tata's Jaguar Land Rover group. The Evoque has been produced since July 2011 in three- and five-door versions, with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The Evoque is designed to appeal to urban buyers and meet requirements for lower CO2 emissions and fuel economy. The production vehicle is similar to the Land Rover LRX concept, which was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2008. The Evoque has been received positively by the automotive press for retaining the features, amenities, and off-road capabilities of a traditional Range Rover in a smaller package. Land Rover sold nearly 88,000 units of the Evoque in its first year of production.
At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover unveiled an Evoque Convertible Concept, calling it "The world’s first premium SUV convertible", in comparison to the mid-level Nissan Murano convertible launched in 2010. The vehicle is based on the three-door Evoque Coupe but with seats for four, and has a power-retractable soft top roof. The concept sits on 21-inch wheels. The Evoque's hatchback has been replaced with a drop-down tailgate. Land Rover has stated that: "The new convertible body has been achieved with minimum changes to weight and torsional rigidity. Land Rover has also stated that the Convertible Concept is as off-road ready as the regular Evoque.
Apparently, Land Rover was smitten with the concept as well, because it is dropping a convertible iteration of the Autoweek 2012 Best of the Best-winning Range Rover Evoque at the Geneva motor show.
Since one of the oft-repeated derisive phrases about the CrossCab is, “It looks like a concept car that should've stayed a concept,” and one of the most hoary plaudits given the Evoque is that it resembles a concept car made production-car flesh, it stands to reason that Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern might consider an Evoque decapotable to be a potentially desirable line extension if he felt that he could nail the execution.
Land Rover's engineers say that 165 pounds of additional bracing would be required to stiffen the small luxury ute for drop-top duty, as well as about two years of R&D to get things just so. With 50,000 Evoques produced and orders for 60,000 more, the company is looking to gauge reaction to the drophead. If interest is low, it doesn't feel the need to divert production capacity for a niche model.

Mahindra Quanto 4x4 2013

ABOUT:

The Mahindra Quanto is a mini SUV designed and manufactured by the Indian Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. It is based on the Mahindra Xylo but with a shorter rear layout to fall under the four metre threshold. It has its spare wheel mounted at the back of the car.
To look at, from the front, the Quanto is almost a clone of the Xylo, with some small cosmetic changes such as the more defined bonnet lines and the new panel above the grille. Some changes that were effected in the Xylo a while ago means that the Quanto can now retain some more of the Xylo’s earlier features which include the headlamp combination.
Trace your eyes along the sides of the Quanto and the vehicle is again quite the clone of the Xylo, carrying forward the exact same lines. Other similarities are the A&B pillars, the wheel arch design, and even the same 15-inch alloy rims in the top-end variant. But the rear is different and frankly that is where the real story of the Quanto lies.
Mahindra engineers have quite literally chopped off about a foot or so of the rear of the Xylo to get a sub-4-metre Quanto. That size paired with a sub-1.5-litre diesel engine automatically qualifies the vehicle for lower excise duty benefits. It offers customers the flexibility of buying a lower-priced and more compact utility vehicle. However, Mahindra has, of course, decided to make the Quanto seem like a crossover now.
If the Xylo looked like an aggressive multi-purpose vehicle with some of Mahindra’s design flair seen in the Scorpio carried forward, the Quanto has been designed to look like a cross between that MPV and a SUV. Or at least it now also sports some of the features that we have come to associate with a SUV.
Tall set tail-lamps at the rear, which are a completely new design, are right at the top of the C pillar. A new spare wheel mounted outside and on the tail gate is meant to capture the attention of buyers who essentially know that they are buying a UV, but want the frills of a sports utility.
But, if you thought that Mahindra engineers have decided to keep the Quanto’s new found SUV genes pure, you would be wrong there too. And that’s because, inside, the new Quanto continues to be a seven-seater. Two foldable jump seats at the rear will still attempt to offer cramped accommodation for passengers. Open the slightly heavy, side-hinged tail gate and the jump seats can be accessed, but can only accommodate two children or petite adults.
The five-door mini SUV is powered by a 1.5 L (1493 cc) three-cylinder 12-valve turbo diesel engine called MCR100, and produces 98.6 bhp (74 kW; 100 PS) @ 3750 rpm and develops 240 N·m (177 lb·ft) torque @1600-2800rpm.
The Quanto shares the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase with the Xylo but is 535 mm (21.1 in) shorter, making it 3,985 mm (156.9 in) long, and 190 kg (420 lb) lighter.
The Quanto is offered for sale in India in a range of four models: C2, C4, C6 and C8. All models share the same diesel engine.

Renault Koleos

ABOUT:

The Renault Koleos is a compact SUV which was first presented as a concept car at the Geneva Motor show in 2000, and then again in 2006 at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris. The Koleos was designed by Renault and developed by Nissan.
It is manufactured by Renault Samsung Motors, a subsidiary of Renault, at its Busan plant in South Korea and the South Korean-market variant is sold as the Renault Samsung QM5. A facelifted version of the Koleos is available as of 2011.
The Koleos is a new addition to the Renault SUV market, after selling the Scenic RX4 and the Kangoo, but it has never produced a true SUV. A Koleos concept car was shown in the media as long ago as February 2000.
The Koleos's body design is based on the Renault Koleos and Renault Egeus concept cars. Some of the Koleos's competitors such as the Citroen C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007 were also presented by the time it was launched. ADAC of Germany awarded five stars to the Koleos in a crash-test done in 2008.
In August 2010, the Koleos was withdrawn from the UK market, due to poor sales of under 2600 units.
In the Indian market Renault produced its premium SUV Koleos on September 8, 2011.
Koleos made its international debut in 2008 and this is the first facelift the vehicle has received since its launch. The popular Koleos registered a 51% YOY growth in the first half of 2011. It is currently being sold across five continents and in markets as diverse as Europe, South America and Asia Pacific.
It will be available with a 2 liter dCi diesel engine with a maximum power output of 150 PS @ 4000 rpm and peak torque of 320 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Volkswagen Polo

ABOUT:

The Volkswagen Polo is a supermini car (subcompact, B-segment in Europe) manufactured by Volkswagen. It is sold in Europe and other markets worldwide in hatchback, saloon, coupe and estate variants.
The Polo was first introduced in 1975, and as of 2011 has been produced in five distinct generations, with additional intervening "facelift" revisions. Related Volkswagen Group models include the Skoda Fabia, SEAT Ibiza and Audi A1.
As of 2009, there have been five separate generations of the Polo, usually identified by a "Series" or "Mark" number.
Some generations were facelifted mid way through production, with the updated versions known unofficially by an addition of the letter F to the mark number, e.g. Mark IIF. Some press and enthusiasts consider the facelifts to be separate models and hence have used the unofficial designations Polo Mark 1 to Mark 7 for previous generations. Each model of Polo is also identified by a two- or three-character Volkswagen Group Typ number. Official VW Polo history describes Mark I to Mark IV using either Roman numerals or Arabic numerals, with facelifted variants known as "Phase II" models.
The body style has been varied through the life of the car, originally as a hatchback which derived from the Audi 50. A saloon version was marketed as the Volkswagen Derby.
Volkswagen vehicles built off different platforms have carried the Polo name plate. For example the Volkswagen Polo Playa hatchback sold in Southern Africa in the late 1990s was a rebadged SEAT Ibiza which has a different body shell from the Mark III Polo sold in Europe at the same time. The current saloon is only available in China, Latin America and South Africa and other Southern Africa countries.
Volkswagen launched the fifth generation Polo (internal designation Typ 6R) at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009. For the first time in Polo's history, the car was declared European Car of the Year, for 2010. The Polo was also declared 2010 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show in April 2010. It also won What Car? Super mini of the Year 2010, as well as being awarded Japan Import Car of the Year for 2010–2011.
It shares its platform with the 2008 SEAT Ibiza Mk4 and the Audi A1. Production for the UK market started in summer 2009, with first deliveries in October 2009. Official images released show the new Polo follows styling cues from the Golf VI. The Polo Mark V is 44 mm longer and 32 mm wider and sits 13 mm lower to the road than the previous generation Polo. Boot capacity is increased by 10 liters to 280 liters of storage space with 952 liters with the seats folded down. The car is 7.5% lighter than its predecessor. The Polo has thorax airbags and has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP crash impact rating.
