The Volkswagen Golf is a subcompact car manufactured by German automaker Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across seven generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates  as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1). The original Golf Mk1, designed by the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, was a front-wheel drive, front engine replacement for the air-cooled, rear engine, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and the world's second best-selling model, with more than 29 million built by 2012. Most production of the Golf was initially in the 3-door hatchback style. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate/wagon (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002), and a Golf-derived notch back saloon/sedan, variously called Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Vento or Volkswagen Bora (from 1999). The cars have filled many market segments, from basic personal cars, to high-performance hot hatches. The Volkswagen Golf has won many awards throughout its history. Every generation of Golf has been a runner-up in the European Car of the Year awards, but only one has been a winner, the Golf Mk3 in 1992. The Volkswagen Golf has been in the Car and Driver 10 Best multiple times.
The new 2013 Volkswagen Golf will be slightly larger than the MK6 while managing to be approximately 100 kg lighter. The GTI will offer a 217 bhp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an available performance pack to raise the output to 227 bhp. The seventh-generation Golf had its debut in late 2012 at the Paris Motor Show. The Golf VII, Typ 5G will use the new MQB platform, shared with the new Audi A3, new SEAT Leon and upcoming Skoda Octavia. The 1.4 TSI is one of only four engines available at launch time. The others are the entry-level 84 bhp 1.2 TSI, the pragmatic 104 bhp 1.6 TDI and the 148 bhp 2.0 TDI. The choice between petrol and diesel is harder than ever, as the gap between them in terms of efficiency and performance is closing. But in either iteration the new Golf is both a great highway cruiser and an entertaining B-road bruiser. You can paddle shift DSG into fifth or sixth and let the torque wave wash you from crest to brow, or you can dive deep into second and third gear territory from where the TSI unit will rev happily to 6500 rpm. At the end of the end of the day the petrol version feels fractionally more light-footed, chuck able and responsive than the diesel. Its broader rev band and the extra gear marginally outflank the 2.0 TDI’s 52lb ft torque advantage. Elements carried forward were in the main technical features that were already future proof in the previous model - for instance the six- and seven-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG). Everything else is new. And that 'new' really means new! For example, the engines: none of them was carried forward unmodified. To be precise, Volkswagen developed two completely new engine generations for the Golf. Every version is fitted as standard with a Stop/Start system (reducing fuel consumption by up to four per cent) and brake energy recovery mode (cutting CO2 by around four per cent).
