Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible 2014

ABOUT:

The Range Rover Evoque is a Compact SUV from Land Rover, part of Tata's Jaguar Land Rover group. The Evoque has been produced since July 2011 in three- and five-door versions, with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The Evoque is designed to appeal to urban buyers and meet requirements for lower CO2 emissions and fuel economy. The production vehicle is similar to the Land Rover LRX concept, which was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2008. The Evoque has been received positively by the automotive press for retaining the features, amenities, and off-road capabilities of a traditional Range Rover in a smaller package. Land Rover sold nearly 88,000 units of the Evoque in its first year of production.
At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover unveiled an Evoque Convertible Concept, calling it "The world’s first premium SUV convertible", in comparison to the mid-level Nissan Murano convertible launched in 2010. The vehicle is based on the three-door Evoque Coupe but with seats for four, and has a power-retractable soft top roof. The concept sits on 21-inch wheels. The Evoque's hatchback has been replaced with a drop-down tailgate. Land Rover has stated that: "The new convertible body has been achieved with minimum changes to weight and torsional rigidity. Land Rover has also stated that the Convertible Concept is as off-road ready as the regular Evoque.
Apparently, Land Rover was smitten with the concept as well, because it is dropping a convertible iteration of the Autoweek 2012 Best of the Best-winning Range Rover Evoque at the Geneva motor show.
Since one of the oft-repeated derisive phrases about the CrossCab is, “It looks like a concept car that should've stayed a concept,” and one of the most hoary plaudits given the Evoque is that it resembles a concept car made production-car flesh, it stands to reason that Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern might consider an Evoque decapotable to be a potentially desirable line extension if he felt that he could nail the execution.
Land Rover's engineers say that 165 pounds of additional bracing would be required to stiffen the small luxury ute for drop-top duty, as well as about two years of R&D to get things just so. With 50,000 Evoques produced and orders for 60,000 more, the company is looking to gauge reaction to the drophead. If interest is low, it doesn't feel the need to divert production capacity for a niche model.
